Neither, actually. They may take prisoners, but those are not considered to be bargaining chips. Mostly, though, they especially do not submit to extortion or blackmail. They never give an enemy that power. They pay for it in blood, pain and sorrow, of course. Nothing is ever without cost.
I see. But if they don’t take prisoners as hostages, then what do they do with them? Put them to work in the fields, if only for them to grow their own foods, or something?
