  1. Silent gratitude isn’t, ….but Thann himself is laying it on a bit thick. They now have to cooperate ever more closely, and need little friction. One wonders if Thann has the self-confidence to deal on a continuing basis with someone of the Count’s stature smoothly. If the locals see all outsiders with this level of suspicion then getting to Gudik will be, …interesting, …because the King’s men will be no less suspicious than the locals. Worse, the news that the Count brings will hardly be welcome. Making his mission effective, in terms of not driving the Greymouth folk into the arms of Shuach, as well as keeping the King alive and getting him and his forces back to Kivalia, is *not* a simple matter from this point.

    1. Agreed, but then again they have to work together and the more Tethik acknowledges Thann’s usefulness the smoother it is likely to go.

As for how difficult the mission will be, well, there’s a reason Ipola sent the very best.

      1. Except she didn’t, she sent that young, inexperienced paramour of Tula’s whose name I cannot recall, we saw him not too long ago, when his spirit said goodbye to Tula in the Otherwhen. Anyway, she sent him along and he got himself killed by Thann here and she “convinced” Thann to replace him.

Or have we forgotten that Thann is an assassin sent to kill Tethik and the only thing making him help Tethik is that ring on his finger and the threat of Ipola’s wrath hanging over his head. Thann should get about as much trust or thanks as you would extend to a rabid animal, which is to say none. I doubt he’s completely learned his lesson since that time he tried to cut off the finger that has the ring on it.

        1. I was referring to Tethik and him only, neither Boric (still sorely missed) nor Thann.

That being said, comparing the latter to a rabid animal is exaggerated. You can trust a rabid animal to try and bite you (or claw at you, in the case of cats), and that’s pretty much it. Tethik can trust Thann to keep up appearances and be a useful companion until their mission is accomplished. Of course he will also try to plan ahead to have the upper hand when they do reach that point, but Tethik has made crystal clear that so will he.

Actually, the more Tethik treats Thann civilly, the more the latter is likely to let his own guard down (which not blessedly much, I agree).

And if I may, we know that Thann wasn’t sent to kill Tethik. He had a perfect opportunity there: https://barbarianprincess.com/comic/the-odd-couples/page-827/ and he let it pass. (Actually, he had two, at the beginning and end of the encounter.) Ipola stated in her ensuing talk with him that Gudik was his target.

Boric successfully fought Thann (who evidence suggests is among the very best) to a standstill for a bit there. He was clearly a very skilled and dangerous warrior.

  2. If hugs count as silent gratitude, I have to disagree with G. B. Stern.

… Then again, I strongly doubt Tethik would use that way of showing his gratitude.

  3. Has Thann’s facial hair changed or am I misremembering?

    1. I was going to agree with you, but I archive-dived to answer to Sogen and realized that it hasn’t changed significantly (see page 827 in the link I posted above).

  4. The Gorram Batguy

I’m just still really enjoying your term “Hieroppist” which I assume is the Terra equivalent of Papist and this “heresy” business is some kind of Catholic-Protestant style split. Great world building.

    1. Given who the Kivalian Royals are modeling, I’d say more early Cathars.

  5. He wouldn’t have needed to run this con, Boric could have told the duck joke and everyone would be his friend.

  6. page 1021 never came up for me, I tried several times.

    1. Bob, it seems to be loading normally from here. Perhaps you could try clearing your cache or trying a different browser?
