Well, at least he’s stepping up to do this himself, instead of sending more minions.
Well, that answers exactly what kind of leader he is…one who takes action. Most likely how he got to be in his position of authority anyway.
I was curious if each Owner of Owners learns some special knowledge passed down by his predecessor regarding the old days. Looks like that’s a “no”.
Of course, if one were cynical, one could suggest that he only stepped up himself once the supply of minions had run out. Fair play to him, though, he didn’t RUN at that point.
Hunter ran, and got respect for his wisdom. This guy is obviously a fool, and will get no respect as he gets magically mutilated and feed to those same eshtak.
why do I feel this is a very bad idea?
so… is he getting himself killed? or kicked? I wonder… And now KL has a nice little pet at his side…. no, I do not mean Gorshash…
uh…I just noticed… what type of sword is that? Is it a sword? (sorry for double posting…)
Looks like KL is going to have a nifty little lightsaber in a mo’.
And he doesn’t even need a Kaiburr crystal.
Kaiburr Crystal? WOW… Now there’s a name I haven’t heard in a long long time! Splinter of the Mind’s Eye reference!
Gonna go out on a limb here and suggest it’s probably an artifact from The Before Times. Y’know … utterly evil, massively powerful, more or less unstoppable. Makes the OoO “invincible,” and thus the BadAss in Charge.
Only … it used to be one of Kor’s toys, maybe he even manufactured it before going to sleep 3,000 years ago. And now he will show his gratitude for some Urtt who is getting it all dirty with his Urtty hands.
I’m beginning to think tyhat the OoO is NOT going to suffer death … he is just going to Suffer. For a rather extended amount of time.
ooooooh…That would be so awesome! I can imagine KL ‘Oh you found it, but thank you for bringing it back….’ and then change him into a toad or something…
I will be certainly wrong but I have the feeling the OoO is not going to die…yet….
Getting the OoO to submit to him might help with the power transition, so Kor has some incentive to let him live. If OoO doesn’t submit, though, Kor has pretty much said he’ll kill him, so we’ll have to see how this goes.
That’s exactly why I thought the OoO might survive a few pages back. Now, though, it seems there’s little hope, since he seems not to show any insight into his situation. Of course, just maybe the OoO is more powerful as a spell-wielder than Gorshash. Then he might survive a round or two with KL, long enough for some sense to be talked into him.
Or possibly OoO may have magic items protecting him from easy direct application of magic, forcing Kor to get creative (eg pulling rocks down from the ceiling etc). We shall see!
Aw bless. He has a magic trinket.
And he still seems to have no idea how horribly outclassed he is…
He’s about to be overkilled, methinks. Still, his magic sword is cool.
what if, at a word, the energy blade will turn on and kill O2 there.
Also, in before High ground.
Nice evil power energy blade. I like it. 🙂
OoO is not very smart, is he? Or just refusing to see how outclassed he is.
I think this is one of the best examples I have ever seen of invincible stupidity. But I do not recall even one example of it that lends itself to any other kind of invincibility.
My favorite quote on this subject:
“Against stupidity the gods themselves contend in vain.”
— Friedrich Schiller [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Die_Jungfrau_von_Orleans]
Thank you for reminding me of a very cool little Asimov story that used that quote 🙂 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Gods_Themselves
It seems that the Urtts have this general hubris as part of their society. Reminds me a little of the Fire clan but without the Erogenian system of honor to help mediate those times when it falls flat. Our high priest got more than a few lessons and survived to tell the tale. I am not sure the OoO has the same mental flexibility, but he’s now been revealed to be more than a thug with a club; so it may happen.
With one word, he makes a sword. But with one word, KL makes heads explode. So, although the OoO is more powerful than we had thought, he still certainly appears to be no challenge at all for KL.
I guess the answer to “What can he be thinking” is that he isn’t. He responds with his feelings, with not the slightest hesitation as to whether or not he can win the fight. A little bit like Zona, as far as that goes, but we’ve seen that she does have sense and self-restraint, even if they’re sometimes hard to find. And she looks nicer and is on the side of good.
By the way, what’s the difference between an Ezhtakk and an Eshtakk?
Oh, silly me. You’ve just spent a whole page showing us just how stupid he is, and I’m expecting him to know how to spell? Even if he can cast spells.
I’d guess one pronunciation is Urrt, and the other is Erogenian.
Maybe Ezhtakks are eztra hungry 😛
With that link back to when Gorshash lost his eye – does anyone else think the guy in the red shirt back then is the same beast handler that was just attacked? His hair and eyes look pretty similar to me. And I wonder what exactly IS an ezhtakk? Presumably not the beast that just ate the handler since it’s obvious that Kor can handle one of them. Interesting also that they apparently prefer ‘cooked’ meat.
They’re the dino-things that urrts ride into battle. Zona, Mentl, and Tula fought a bunch of them after escaping Gorshash’s cave.
So is there anyone left besides the OoO?
Well, it appeared KL was only ‘sploding aggressors so I would imaging the Erogenian slaves and female Urrts are still nearby. Although I’m sure they exited stage right AND left while the big bad was distracted.
Well, you can see one of the female Urrts in the background when OoO ‘draw’ his sword and challenge Kor, so at least one is still there.
I’m ready by the chalkboard…
“O-o-oink!” [scritch scritch]
There it is.
Urtts 1 Evil Mammal Biped 7
Look Ma! No learning curve!
Jeez some ‘people’ just can’t or won’t learn (says something about Urtt intelligence even among the leadership). I wonder if KL is going to be creative with o3 and do something like keeping him in enduring pain while shackled to his own throne or just do the ‘splodey thing on him.
What will happen next?
A scene change? – Too soon.
KL makes OoO’s head explode – anticlimactic!
KL sends a lightning bolt to the OoO, and the OoO blocks it, possibly with his sword – This makes sense if the OoO is in Gorshash’s class for wielding magic. Possible, but I’m thinking that’s unlikely.
KL says G’Kran – The OoO is a cretin, even if not northern… but KL is known for economy of effort; the OoO isn’t worth working up a sweat.
KL says Don Verta Mu – Nothing like being held at swordpoint with your own sword to encourage you to meditate on the hopelessness of your position.
However, even though the last alternative is just about the best I can come up with, I think that JED may have something planned that’s even better. Like KL swipes the sword, and then the OoO says another magic word, and we learn that the sword is… booby-trapped! Then KL dismisses the booby-trap with ease, of course…
“You know what my problem is? I don’t learn from my mistakes!” — Regina, Once Upon a Time.
Just noticing something (again). OoO is screaming ‘outrage, this has gone too far’ when KL turns Nushka against its owner/trainer.
Why not before, when his guards and others were slayed? is there something about turning a pet against its owner? or turning a pet at all? Unless Nushka is OoO’s pet???
Or I am seeing something where there is nothing….
I think it’s “nothing” except the fact that the last few pages have unfolded in a matter of seconds in “real” time in their world.
On the other hand, being fed to an Eshtakk (animal) is considered a particularly ignominious form of death among the Urrts, used as a penalty for failure, treason, and the like.
oh, yeah, I didnd’t think about that. Might be this… or because as you said, it’s a matter of seconds… But I liked the idea that OoO was just outraged because Nushka has been turned… would add something to OoO. if not much of course.
It’s possible that the beast’s master was a relation of the OoO.
I can see it now…the ancient Eregonian uses a “hold person” type spell on him, walks up and takes the sword away.
“Ah, thank you for taking good care of this for me. It’s in fine working order.” (Impales OoO with it.)
I dunno guys, do you really get to be “Owner of Owners” by being weak or stupid? Given what we know about Urtt society, I doubt it.
Not that I give Owner of Owners good odds on not getting owned, here but he may have some tricks up his sleeve.
You obviously get to be Owner of Owners by being able to wield the biggest stick, true. But being smart? Not exactly a survival trait among Urrts. Smart Urrts like Gorshash are quite rare, and rarer still, in a position of authority. Their society is governed by the “Urrt SMASH” philosophy. The strongest, most aggressive, and most brutal gets to rule over everyone else. This philosophy has served OoO quite well for a while. (Plenty of slaves, mates, pets, and all the trappings of power) but is failing him badly now, and he really has no alternate method of behavior to draw upon.
Perhaps we will now see an Owner of Owner of Owners…
